Information We Collect
Account information. When you create or sign in to an account, Dr. Read may collect your email address, display name, sign-in provider, email verification status, and Firebase user ID. If you use Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, those providers may provide information needed to authenticate your account.
Reading content. When you take or select photos of printed text, Dr. Read uses on-device text recognition to extract text from those images. The photos are used to prepare the reading session in the app, and Dr. Read does not intentionally upload or store page photos in its backend. When you ask a question in Reading Mode, Dr. Read sends the extracted text, your question transcript, and recent conversation history to our backend so an answer can be generated.
Audio and speech information. Reading Mode uses your device microphone and Apple speech recognition to turn spoken questions into text. Dr. Read uses the resulting transcript to answer your question. Audio levels may be used locally to show the listening animation.
Usage and app activity. Dr. Read collects information about app activity such as reading session starts and completions, page counts, reading duration, question length, conversation turn counts, feature use, paywall views, purchase and restore events, last active time, and free usage limit counters.
Purchase and subscription information. Dr. Read receives subscription status and purchase event information from Apple and RevenueCat, including product identifiers, entitlement status, store, transaction identifiers, subscription dates, renewal status, cancellation status, billing issue status, refund status, and RevenueCat event details.
Local device information. Dr. Read stores some settings and cached session history on your device, such as the last sign-in method and recent reading session records.
Subscriptions and Purchases
Dr. Read Plus purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. RevenueCat helps us manage subscription status, restore purchases, and keep your Dr. Read Plus access connected to your signed-in account. Apple and RevenueCat process purchase information according to their own privacy policies.
How We Use Information
We use information to authenticate accounts, provide reading sessions, recognize text from selected pages, answer questions about scanned text, speak answers aloud, enforce free usage limits, maintain reading history, provide analytics about app functionality, unlock and restore subscriptions, prevent unauthorized access, debug and improve app reliability, provide support, and process account deletion requests.
Question Answering
When you ask a question about scanned text, Dr. Read sends your authenticated request to a Firebase Cloud Function. That request may include the question transcript, extracted text from the pages you selected, and recent conversation turns. The backend uses the relevant text to generate a short answer grounded in the scanned text. Dr. Read does not use this content for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Photos, Camera, and Photo Library
Dr. Read asks for camera or photo library access only when you choose to take or select page photos. Text recognition happens on device using Apple Vision. The app does not need access to your full photo library unless you grant it through iOS permissions. You can change camera, photo, microphone, and speech recognition permissions in iOS Settings.
Service Providers
Dr. Read uses service providers to operate the app, including Firebase Authentication, Firebase Analytics, Cloud Firestore, Firebase Cloud Functions, Firebase Hosting, Google Sign-In if you choose Google authentication, Apple for Sign in with Apple, Apple speech recognition, Apple Vision text recognition, App Store billing, RevenueCat for subscription management, and a backend answer-generation provider.
How We Share Information
We share information with service providers only as needed to operate Dr. Read, such as authentication, analytics, subscription management, hosting, account deletion, and question answering. We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of users or others, or in connection with a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
Tracking
Dr. Read does not sell your personal information and does not use collected data to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. Dr. Read does not use third-party advertising identifiers for targeted advertising.
Data Retention
We keep account, subscription, usage, feature event, and reading session information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the app, maintain subscriptions, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. Recent reading session history may also be cached locally on your device. Purchase records may continue to be retained by Apple or RevenueCat according to their own retention practices.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information handled by Dr. Read. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Account Deletion
You can delete your Dr. Read account in the app from Profile > Delete Account. Deleting your account removes your Firebase Authentication account and backend account data stored for Dr. Read, including user profile data, usage data, reading session records, feature events, and subscription event records stored under your user account. Deleting your Dr. Read account does not cancel an active App Store subscription; you must cancel subscriptions separately in App Store settings.
Your Choices
You can choose not to provide certain information, but some features may not work without it. For example, Reading Mode needs camera or photo access to scan pages, microphone and speech recognition access to understand spoken questions, and an account to sync usage and subscription status. You can manage app permissions in iOS Settings, sign out in the app, delete your account in Profile, and manage or cancel subscriptions in App Store settings.
Children
Dr. Read is designed to support reading practice, which may include use by younger readers with a parent, guardian, teacher, or other responsible adult. If you believe a child has provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact us and we will review the request.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and may provide additional notice in the app or on our website.
