Information We Collect
Account information. When you create or sign in to an account, Dr. Read may collect your email address, display name, sign-in provider, email verification status, Firebase user ID, and related account identifiers. If you use Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, those providers may provide information needed to authenticate your account.
Reading content. When you take or select photos of printed text, Dr. Read prepares those images on device and sends selected page photos, page order, and text extracted from those pages to Dr. Read's backend so the reading session can be prepared. Dr. Read may also process page labels, page-check results, content-safety results, and other session setup metadata.
Live audio and speech information. During a live tutoring session, Dr. Read uses your device microphone and streams microphone audio to Dr. Read's backend so your reading, answers, and spoken questions can be understood and answered. Dr. Read may process speech transcripts, questions, answers, recent conversation context, tutor responses, and audio playback telemetry. Audio levels may also be used locally to show the listening animation.
Usage and app activity. Dr. Read collects information about app activity such as reading session starts and completions, page counts, reading duration, question length, conversation turn counts, feature use, paywall views, purchase and restore events, last active time, error states, and free usage limit counters.
Purchase and subscription information. Dr. Read receives subscription status and purchase event information from Apple and RevenueCat, including product identifiers, entitlement status, store, transaction identifiers, subscription dates, renewal status, cancellation status, billing issue status, refund status, and RevenueCat event details.
Local device information. Dr. Read stores some settings and cached session history on your device, such as the last sign-in method, recent reading session records, consent status, and app preferences.
Support and account deletion information. If you contact us for support or request account deletion, we may collect the information you provide and use it to respond to your request.
AI Reading Sessions and Permission
Before Dr. Read sends reading-session data to AI, speech, OCR, or tutoring providers, the app asks for permission and explains what will be sent. If you allow it, Dr. Read sends your authenticated request to Dr. Read's backend. Requests may include selected page photos, text extracted from those pages, microphone audio during the live session, transcripts or questions, tutor responses, recent conversation turns, page order, and session tokens.
Dr. Read's backend may share relevant parts of that data with service providers so Dr. Read can prepare pages, check page quality and safety, transcribe speech, understand live reading, answer questions, and speak tutor responses aloud. If you do not allow AI processing, you will not be able to start a live reading session that requires those providers.
Dr. Read does not use reading-session data for advertising or cross-app tracking.
How We Use Information
We use information to authenticate accounts, provide reading sessions, prepare selected page photos for tutoring, recognize and structure text from selected pages, check page quality and content safety, understand live reading audio and spoken questions, answer questions about scanned text, speak tutor responses aloud, connect realtime sessions, enforce free usage limits, maintain reading history, provide app functionality analytics, unlock and restore subscriptions, prevent unauthorized access, debug and improve app reliability, provide support, and process account deletion requests.
Photos, Camera, and Photo Library
Dr. Read asks for camera or photo library access only when you choose to take or select page photos. The app prepares page photos on device before upload, including image normalization and text-layout checks using Apple Vision. Selected page photos may then be sent to Dr. Read's backend and service providers for OCR, page checking, and reading-session preparation. The app does not need access to your full photo library unless you grant it through iOS permissions. You can change camera, photo, and microphone permissions in iOS Settings.
Audio, Transcripts, and Voice Data
During live tutoring sessions, microphone audio may be streamed to Dr. Read's backend and speech service providers to create transcripts and understand spoken reading, answers, and questions. Dr. Read may also send generated tutor text to text-to-speech providers so the tutor can speak aloud.
Dr. Read does not use microphone audio to identify you, create a voiceprint, or create a biometric template.
Subscriptions and Purchases
Dr. Read Plus purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. RevenueCat helps us manage subscription status, restore purchases, and keep your Dr. Read Plus access connected to your signed-in account. Apple and RevenueCat process purchase information according to their own privacy policies.
Service Providers
Dr. Read uses service providers to operate the app, including Firebase Authentication, Firebase Analytics, Cloud Firestore, Firebase Cloud Functions, Google Sign-In if you choose Google authentication, Apple for Sign in with Apple, Apple Vision for on-device page preparation, App Store billing, RevenueCat for subscription management, and Microsoft Azure hosting services.
Dr. Read's AI, speech, OCR, and tutoring providers may include Microsoft Azure AI services, Google Gemini, Mistral AI, Deepgram, DeepInfra, ElevenLabs, and FAL. These providers process data through Dr. Read's backend only as needed to provide Dr. Read's reading session features.
How We Share Information
We share information with service providers only as needed to operate Dr. Read, such as authentication, analytics, subscription management, hosting, account deletion, page preparation, content-safety checks, OCR, speech recognition, AI tutoring, and text-to-speech audio. Service providers that receive personal data are required to handle it under the same or equal privacy and security protections described in this policy and to use it only to provide services to Dr. Read.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of users or others, to investigate misuse or security issues, or in connection with a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets.
Tracking, Sale, and Advertising
Dr. Read does not sell your personal information and does not use collected data to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. Dr. Read does not use third-party advertising identifiers for targeted advertising.
Your Privacy Choices and Rights
You can manage camera, photo, and microphone permissions in iOS Settings. You can decline AI data sharing before starting a tutoring session, but some reading-session features will not work without that processing. You can sign out in the app, manage subscriptions in App Store settings, and delete your account from Profile > Delete Account.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of personal information we maintain about you, and to appeal or ask questions about our response. You may contact us at support@drread.com to make a privacy request. We will verify and respond to requests as required by applicable law.
Dr. Read does not sell personal information or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide required choices before doing so.
Data Retention
We keep account, subscription, usage, feature event, and reading session information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the app, maintain subscriptions, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, prevent misuse, and maintain security. Recent reading session history may also be cached locally on your device.
Reading-session artifacts such as selected page photos, extracted text, transcripts, logs, and generated session files are retained only as long as reasonably needed for session operation, reliability, debugging, support, security, legal compliance, or service improvement, and may be deleted or de-identified when no longer needed. Backup copies may remain for a limited period as part of normal backup rotation. Purchase records may continue to be retained by Apple or RevenueCat according to their own retention practices.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information handled by Dr. Read. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Account Deletion
You can delete your Dr. Read account in the app from Profile > Delete Account. Deleting your account removes your Firebase Authentication account and backend account data stored for Dr. Read, including user profile data, usage data, reading session records, feature events, and subscription event records stored under your user account. Deleting your Dr. Read account does not cancel an active App Store subscription; you must cancel subscriptions separately in App Store settings.
Children and Minors
Dr. Read is a general-audience education app and is not directed to children under 13. Children under 13 should use Dr. Read only with involvement and supervision from a parent, guardian, teacher, or other responsible adult using an adult-managed account.
If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to Dr. Read without appropriate adult involvement, contact us at support@drread.com and we will review and delete information as required by law.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and may provide additional notice in the app or on our website.
